Is a Seaplane/Floatplane Rating the same
thing?
In the United States you may train in either a
flying boat (Lake Amphibian) or float plane
and become certified to fly any single-engine seaplane
when you complete your rating.
Where will I do my flight training & how
long does it take?
We recommend training at our
Grand Lake facility. We
park the
airplane on the beach right
behind our cabin where we can immediately enter the Lake for water work.
This saves time
(and money) over training from KRVS where we must fly 20 minutes to reach water
for each
lesson. Even if you pay $150 for two nights room & board it is less expensive than
flying 40
minutes back & forth to KRVS for each lesson. We can even pick you up at KTUL if you
airline
in and begin our training there. Even the 30 minutes required to fly to Grand Lake will
be
productive as we will do our airwork on the way. We can also meet you at Grove (KGMJ) or
Ketchum (1K8) if you arrive in your plane.
We prefer three days for training. This gives us
plenty of time in case of weather or maintenance
issues. Friday through Sunday works well because our
examiner is usually available Sundays.
Do you have an examiner on Staff and
what is your pass rate ?
Our examiner Larry Lay is an independent
businessman from Wichita. We must schedule him
in advance. The more advance notice we have the better,
a few weeks is best. He is a Physician
& usually available only on Wednesdays, Saturdays &
Sundays. We flight train to proficiency
following practical test standards & thoroughly
prep you for your oral . We have a 100% pass rate.
Can we train in the Winter?
We must suspend water work during freezing
weather. Water freezing in or on the hull is very
hazardous. That being said ,we have some flyable
weather every month of the year. It's
more difficult to predict ahead of time in the winter.
We suggest that your train April through
October if you're making airline reservations or
traveling far. If you're nearby & have a flexible
schedule weather has allowed training even in January &
February.
Will I get a Private or Commercial Seaplane
Rating?
The Seaplane rating "adds-on " to your existing
Private or Commercial Pilots License.
If you are a private pilot & you plan on training for a
commercial license. We recommend
you complete you commercial license then you will be trained
in Seaplanes to commercial
standards. If you get a private seaplane rating & later get a
commercial pilots license it will
have a restriction that says "private privileges only -
seaplanes" unless you take a commercial
seaplane checkride.
What does it cost for a seaplane rating?
The aircraft is $195/hr dual. The examiner fee
is $350. Room & Board at our cabin ( if needed)
is $75/night. While there is no FAA minimum number of
hours, most students complete in
6-8 hours. Total cost for an 8 hour Private/Commercial
rating with room, board & examiner fee
is $2060.
